The Monastery

Queen Catherine of Lancaster assumed the responsibility of building a church in the place where a pastor had found the image of the Virgen de la Soterraña. Once the bull of Pope Clement VII was obtained in 1393, the works by the order of Santo Domingo began.

The cloister, which is attached to the south wing of the church, was built in the first half of the 15th century. Throughout its galleries, more than four hundred representations are distributed that decorate both the four faces of the capitals, as well as the top, the back of the arches or their spandrels. The themes are varied: geometric, vegetal, religious, scenes from late medieval society, etc.

In 1920 both the north portal and the cloister were declared National Monuments, thus being classified as assets of cultural interest.
